Bite size educational programme in clinic

Leal Catarina , Pemberton John , McCoubrey Hilary

Introduction: Ongoing structured education for children and young people with type 1 diabetes and their families is considered essential by ISPAD (2014) and NICE (2015), because there is a lot of education and skills that need to be reinforced. In 2016 the majority of the self-management education was provided at our trust by diabetes self-management education (DSME) sessions, which are two hour sessions designed to improve self-management. KISS Advanced Bolus System for managing the post-prandial glycemic effect of fat and protein in young people with T1D

Pemberton John , Leal Catarina , Hilary McCoubrey

Objectives: The Diabetes Team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital modified the advanced bolus algorithm suggested by Bell (2015), to develop the KISS (Keep it Simple and Safe). KISS involves adding 25% extra insulin to meals identified as very high fat and protein, and spreading the insulin by a split bolus, 50% now and 50% over 2.5 hours. KISS also has an adjustment tool allowing extra insulin to be added and the split modified from monitoring. KISS is intended to be a sim...

Personalised carbohydrate prescriptions using individualised calculations prevent over prescribing carbohydrate to newly diagnosed children and young people with type 1 diabetes

Leal Catarina , Pemberton John , Kholi Anjanee

Introduction: The International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) 2022 Nutritional Guidelines recommend calculating carbohydrate requirements using an indivualised equation, such as the Schofield equation. Up to 2023, our centre used the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) 2011 guidelines that only require age to determine average carbohydrate requirements. The latest National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA) showed our centr...

Cardiorespiratory fitness is decreased and not correlated with C-Reactive Protein levels in adults with Diabetes Mellitus

Francisco C. , Catai A. , Moura S. , Lopes S. , Del Vale A. , Leal A.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has been associated with lung dysfunction and impairment of cardiorespiratory fitness and increasing evidences have suggested that comorbidities and systemic inflammation may be involved in these derangements. However, the results regarding cardiopulmonary dysfunction and its underlying mechanisms in DM are still controversial. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between metabolic variables and inflammation marker, including hemoglobin A1C (HbA1...

Rickets in a patient with melnick needles syndrome

Leite Luciana Pedral S. D. , Pithon Ricardo B. , Leal Angela Cristina G.

Introduction: Melnick Needles Syndrome corresponds to a rare skeletal dysplasia of genetic etiology, with dominant inheritance pattern attached to the X chromosome. Mutations related to the gene of filamina A, which is responsible for the synthesis of collagen, are responsible for the clinical and phenotypic manifestations of the disease, with predominantly female involvement. Rickets are caused by inadequate mineralization of the bone, which precedes the closure of the epiphy...

Introduction: PATRO adults is an international, longitudinal, non-interventional study of the long-term safety and efficacy of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH; Omnitrope®, Sandoz). The study will provide additional data on the long-term safety of rhGH in adult patients with severe GH deficiency (GHD). Here, we present safety data from an interim analysis. Methods: Eligible patients are adults who are receiving treatment with Omnitro...
